Arterski wells – salvation for farmers in the Valjevo region!

Faced with increasingly long dry periods throughout the year and water shortages, and in order to maintain production, the farmers of Valjevo villages are forced to invest money in digging arterial wells. This problem was also recognized by the city of Valjevo, and in the budget intended for incentives in agriculture, funds are allocated for these purposes as well.

Excavation of arterial wells is co-financed

As part of the Support Program for the implementation of agricultural policy and rural development policy, which is implemented by the company “Agrorazvoj – Valjevske doline”, from 2022, the excavation or drilling of arterial wells for the purpose of irrigation in the territory of the city of Valjevo is co-financed.

Legal well: How to get to it and how much will it cost?

This year alone, 19 requests from local farmers have been sent to the address of “Agrorazvoja”, and so far 10 wells have been drilled in which water has been found.

The perennial problem with water supply was recently solved in the household of Vladimir Andrić from the village of Joševa. Water was found at a depth of 88 meters, the yield of the well is 30 to 40 liters per minute.

“The number of cattle has increased, there is a lot of watering, and a lot is being consumed in the house, which the existing source from which we used water could not satisfy. Because of this, as well as severe droughts and a growing lack of water, I decided to apply to Agrorazvoj for digging a well. Now we just use this borehole, and our neighbors are supplied with water from it without any problems,” says this young herder.

Summer months are always critical

Local farmers note that whoever has a little more consumption on the farm, and is supplied with spring water, has problems. This is especially pronounced in the summer months with high temperatures.

“Until now, we were supplied with water from a natural fall, from a source five and a half kilometers from the house, but that source could not meet our water needs. We have a lot of livestock and use up to six tons of water a day. There are currently 44 cows in the barn, more than half of which are dairy cows. Every year the drought is getting worse and that’s why we decided to dig an arterial well.

We found a nice amount of water at a depth of 136 meters with a tank, and the flow is 23 liters per minute. We are very satisfied, because this quantity can satisfy the needs of six households, such as ours”, says Sveta Kosić, a farmer from Gola Glava near Valjevo.

In a period of three years, 81 requests were submitted, 38 arterial wells were drilled, for which 37 million dinars were allocated in the agricultural budget. Water was found in over 70 percent of the wells, as there were locations where there was no water after drilling. Farms engaged in livestock and fruit production have the advantage of this type of incentives.

Wells most useful for cattlemen in hilly areas

“Wells are dug mostly in villages that are in hilly areas. The measure is very important, because there is a growing problem with water supply, especially in households engaged in cattle production. Primarily, the owners of those farms decided to drill arterial wells. This year, we had requests from four farmers in Golaja Glava, and they are all serious producers.

The measure has already met its goal, and probably for this reason we will allocate more money for these purposes next year. There are a lot of submitted requests, and based on the planned funds in the budget, we can finance the excavation of up to 20 wells per year,” says Goran Marjanović, director of the company “Agrorazvoj – Valjevske Doline”.

The minimum amount of refund is 60 percent of the total value of the investment, and if the well is up to 100 meters deep, the refund is up to 600 thousand dinars. According to Marjanović, it happens that water is found at a depth of 50 to 70 meters, which, he says, leaves room for financing the excavation of several more wells, beyond the planned number.
