Artificial Intelligence amazes meteorologists in Taiwan

Meteorologists in Taiwan are using artificial intelligence to predict the paths of typhoons that threaten the island. The first measurements took place in the summer and the results exceeded expectations. A storm called Bebinca is headed for Taiwan.

As Tropical Storm Bebinca heads toward waters off northern Taiwan, meteorologists in Taipei are using a new and so far successful method to track its path. It is about artificial intelligence, according to Reuters.

Artificial intelligence-generated forecasts, some powered by software from tech giants, have outperformed traditional methods in predicting typhoon tracks. In July, artificial intelligence-based weather models used for the first time helped Taiwan better predict the path and impact of Typhoon Gaemi, the strongest to hit the island in eight years.

The new technology impressed the specialists in Taiwan

The new technology impressed experts in Taiwan, predicting a direct hit eight days before Gaemi hit the ground, easily outperforming conventional methods.

“People are starting to realize that artificial intelligence has really delivered some amazing performance compared to conventional models,” said Chia Hsin-sing, director at weather service provider Taiwan Integrated Disaster Prevention of Technology Engineering Consulting Company Ltd.

Storm Bebinca is tracked using the same AI tools.
