Artificial Intelligence is funnier than humans, a study concludes

  • The University of Southern California study shows that artificial intelligence (AI) is often funnier than humans in comedy challenges.
  • The ChatGPT AI model was rated positively compared to human responses in tasks such as interpreting acronyms and creating ironies.
  • Over 200 human judges found the AI’s answers funnier 69.5% of the time, with a remarkable dominance in the “roast” and acronyms tasks.

Artificial Intelligence is funnier than humans, a study concludes

In a study conducted at the University of Southern California, researchers explored the comedic capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) compared to humans, concluding that AI often surpasses human ingenuity, according to Indy100.

The study involved 105 participants who were tasked with generating funny responses to various challenges, including interpreting acronyms and delivering ironies. At the same time, ChatGPT was also presented with the same challenges and generated 20 different answers for each task.

More than 200 human judges then rated these responses on a scale of 0 to 6 based on their degree of humor. Remarkably, ChatGPT’s responses were rated funnier by the judges 69.5% of the time across all tasks. Particularly impressive was the AI’s dominance in the “irony” task, where it outperformed human responses by 87%, and in the acronym challenge, where it outperformed humans by 73%.

Lead researcher Drew Gorenz outlined the implications of these findings, stressing that despite a lack of emotional capacity, ChatGPT demonstrated an ability to create new and funny content superior to that of the average human. This suggests that emotional commitment is not necessary to create and appreciate humor effectively.

The study highlights the rapid advances in AI technology, asking questions about its impact on the creative industries and the future of human-machine interactions. As AI continues to evolve, its ability to replicate and even surpass human capabilities in areas traditionally considered unique to human cognition, such as creativity and humor, challenges conventional notions of human superiority in these areas.
