Arto Nyberg: “Where there is pain, movement is the best health advice I have received”

Journalist piloting his own talk show on YLE tv 1 Arto Nyberg has learned through experience that movement is often the best pain reliever. At least this is the case with his potema’s osteoarthritis.

The man’s left knee has been operated on eight times.

— In 2011, an osteotomy was performed on it, which reduced the load at the point of osteoarthritis. Before that, the pain was impossible. After the surgery, the knee was permanently slightly bent, which means that there was a slight hindrance in movement, but the constant pain stopped.

— It’s just stuck somewhere in the back of my head. At least whistling won’t cure the pain. It has always been advised to move the knee in one way or another. Healing is accelerated when blood circulation improves.

“I need team sports”

Although the sofa’s appeal has grown over the years, exercise is important to Arto, also for social reasons.

— In the summer, I take one or two hour walks and play with equipment at outdoor gyms in the city of Helsinki. On city holidays, you will walk for many hours without even noticing. I have enough of the skin pigment of a person from the northern region that I can’t really lie on the beach, and I’m not interested anyway.

Arto started hockey at the age of 45, not at the age of 4.5. According to him, there is a certain difference.

— I’ve been playing soccer since I was young, but I had to change sports because of knee problems. I’m not good at ice hockey, but the Sobriety and Sports Club Zoom has such a big-hearted group that even a crooked knee can join. I need team sports. My work is so selfish that if my hobby were an individual sport, I would probably be an even more difficult person.
