As early as 2025, Apple may launch its first smart display with HomeOS

Apple’s knack for always being able to shake up any category it enters, but there’s one glaring gap in its lineup: it hasn’t yet dabbled in smart displays. With the Amazon Echo and Google Nest dominating our living rooms, it seemed like it was only a matter of time before Apple took an interest here as well.

There are new reports suggesting that Apple could release not one but two smart home devices as early as next year, powered by a brand new operating system called “HomeOS”.

According to his Mark Gurman BloombergApple is currently working on two smart displays, each designed to bring Apple’s AI into your home. The first, codenamed J595, it’s the product we’ve been hearing a lot about for the past few months, and it’s essentially a premium product that combines a large screen – kind of like an iPad – with a robotic arm. Our guess is that it would allow the device to move or rotate its screen to follow a user’s voice or keep them in camera frame.

The second device, codenamed J490, is said to be a low-cost smart display designed primarily for FaceTime calls and controlling smart home gadgets. Gurman suggests that this device could be released as early as next year, potentially serving as a flagship companion to the more advanced J595, which is expected to cost upwards of $1,000.

Both devices are said to run Apple’s new HomeOS operating system, which is said to be based on the foundations of tvOS, the software that currently powers Apple TV devices.

Unlike the current generation of Apple TV and HomePod devices, which lack the necessary hardware for built-in AI processing, these new smart displays will reportedly be able to run artificial intelligence models locally, allowing them to perform some or all Apple Intelligence functions .

Another Apple smart device similar to Gurman’s description of the J490 Smart Display also surfaced in a separate report a few days ago. It will reportedly be designed as a hub for everyday tasks and will feature apps like Calendar, Notes and Home.

For now, all signs point to that 2025 is the year Apple finally gets into the smart display game.
