Netflix is removing much of this CONTENT: As of December 1st, it will no longer be available
Netflix will remove almost all of its interactive series and movies from December 1st. There are 24 titles on Netflix’s Interactive Specials page, but only four will remain: Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy Vs. the Reverend, Ranveer vs. Wild with Bear Grylls and You vs. Wild.
The removal of these titles marks a disappointing finish Netflix’s early attempts at interactive content. The company first launched interactive titles in 2017 with Puss in Book: Trapped in an Epic Talelater came i Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.
In addition to specials based on franchises such as Carmen Sandiego i Boss BabyNetflix has also been experimenting with ideas like a daily quiz series and a quiz game you can play with a friend. However, the relatively small number of available titles suggests that the format was not particularly successful — Puss in Book has apparently been removed for some time.
“The technology has served its purpose, but is now limiting as we focus on technology efforts in other areas,” spokeswoman Kristi Kelleher said.
The removals also come after Netflix’s former head of games, Mike Verdu — who just announced he’s VP of “GenAI for Games” at Netflix — told Game File’s Steven Totillo that the company is no longer building interactive titles.
These removals are another example of how Netflix is trying to find its place in the gaming industry. While Netflix has a rich portfolio of mobile titles (which are increasingly based on its own reality TV shows), the company recently shut down its AAA game studio before releasing a game. Also, the beta version of Netflix’s game streaming service is still in testing, even though it expanded to the US over a year ago.
