As of January 1, teachers’ salaries are 12 percent higher

The Prime Minister of Serbia, Miloš Vučević, said that starting January 1, the salaries of the teaching staff will be increased by 12 percent.

He added that the salaries of non-teaching staff will be higher by eight percent, as well as other employees in the public sector.

Vucevic spoke with representatives of the education union about improving the financial position of employees in this field, and the continuation of negotiations was also agreed at the meeting, his cabinet announced.

He said that the increase in salaries of teaching staff compared to other employees in the public sector will be 50 percent higher, which, according to him, will contribute to the initial salary in education amounting to 94 percent of the average salary in Serbia.

He added that in the future, the Government of Serbia will strive to equalize the starting salary in education with the average salary in the country, which is one of the demands of the education union.

Vucevic also stated that the largest number of demands of the education union, which were defined by the Protocol signed last year, had been met.

At the meeting, it was agreed that the Government of Serbia and the education unions work together on the adoption of a strategic document on improving the situation in the field of education.

Unions: No agreement was reached

The representative unions of educational workers of Serbia (SPRS) announced that no agreement was reached with the Prime Minister of Serbia regarding the fulfillment of the obligations to improve the material status included in the signed Protocol.

“The stated dynamics and amounts of increase do not follow the signed Protocol. Trade unions are particularly opposed to the division of employees in schools into teaching and non-teaching staff. With your activities and participation in upcoming actions, you will contribute to the improvement of further possible negotiations with the Government,” the announcement reads.

At the meeting, it was agreed that negotiations on improving the financial position of employees in education will continue.

The representative unions of Serbian educators consist of the SPRS Union, the Education Union of Serbia, the branch union of Serbian educators “Nezavisnost” and the Serbian Education Workers’ Union.
