ASUS ExpertBook P5 (P5405CSA) / Elegant and durable laptop for business users

The ASUS ExpertBook product family is primarily aimed at the corporate environment with its parameters, durability and, of course, elegant design. The processor has an NPU with a performance of 47 TOPS, so the notebook meets the hardware requirements of Copilot+ PC.

The metal body in the shade of Misty Gray gives the thin ultrabook durability, which you will appreciate especially on business trips, and also contributes to effective cooling. ASUS ExpertBook P5 meets the demanding durability requirements of the US military MIL-STD-810H durability standard. The display can be tilted up to 180 degrees, which you will appreciate if you are showing something to people sitting at the table across from you.

The heart of the notebook is an Intel Core Ultra 7 258V processor with Lunar Lake architecture and an integrated 32 GB LPDDR5X memory with a maximum clock speed of 8533 MT/s. The CPU has four Lion Cove Performance cores and four Low Power Efficient Skymont cores. Although the integrated memory on a common substrate with the processor does not allow for expansion, it does bring a significant acceleration of the system, because the signals between the CPU and the memory overcome the minimum possible distance. The maximum turbo frequency is 4.8 GHz, the nominal TDP is 17 W. The real performance is given by the high efficiency of the ExpertCool cooling system, which ensures optimal cooling both with the display lid open and closed. Under normal load, the cooling system is very quiet. The minimum power consumption is 8 W, and this parameter explains the very long battery life. The chip also has a powerful integrated Intel Arc 140 V graphics with Xe2 architecture with support for ray tracking and NPU (Neural Processing Unit), which is a hardware accelerator for AI and machine learning tasks with a performance of 47 TOPS. TOPS (Tera Operations per Second) is a metric used to measure AI performance and speed in trillions of operations per second. The NPU is used for long-running AI tasks that do not require high performance. For example, to blur the background of the image and suppress ambient noise during video calls, to textually transcribe the spoken word and create a summary, subtitle videos in the selected language, insert a watermark when sharing the screen or in the image from the camera so that communication partners do not steal your image. Basically, I have listed the main features of the AI ExpertMeet app, currently in beta, which integrates these features. After running this app for the first time, a 6 gigabyte update started to install, based on the volume I’m guessing including the local AI model. However, transliteration only works for English, Chinese, Italian, German and Portuguese. Of course, the first thing I tried was a video with a Slovak commentary when set to English. I was surprised to get a pretty good English transcription.

The IPS display with a diagonal of 14 inches has a resolution of 2560 × 1600 pixels and an effective anti-reflection treatment. The 16:10 aspect ratio allows you to display more content in portrait, which you will appreciate especially when working with documents. The manufacturer states 100% coverage of the NTSC color space. In the center of the display, I measured the backlight brightness of 409 nits, the manufacturer states 400 nits. The maximum brightness is sufficient even for working on a sunny day, of course in the shade, for example on the terrace of a cafe. By default, the refresh rate is set to 60 Hz. If you increase it to 144 Hz, the image will be smoother, but the consumption will increase a little.

For a device intended for businesses, the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 security chip is a given, which is required for an additional layer of security in Windows 11. The TPM chip securely stores authentication information used by software, such as passwords or encryption keys, to protect important data and transactions. Your data remains encrypted, which virtually eliminates the risk of information leakage through hacker attacks. For biometric authentication, you can use either the fingerprint sensor in the power button, which is part of the keyboard, or facial biometrics through the integrated camera and infrared camera. ASUS AdaptiveLock technology monitors your presence and automatically locks the laptop when you move away. After returning, it will automatically unlock again.

The webcam with full HD resolution (1080p) and IR function on Windows Hello has several intelligent functions using AI. You can use background blur or perspective correction, which adjusts the image so that it looks as if you are still looking at the camera. A safety lens cap is a matter of course. During video calls, you will also appreciate the microphone with noise and noise suppression using AI, which optimizes the capture of the human voice. The AI ClearVoice function ensures optimal voice reproduction of your communication partners. Turn off this function when listening to music or watching videos. The pair of speakers is directed diagonally downwards. The sound is significantly better than you would expect considering the size of the laptop.

The keyboard has a standard key layout including the Copilot key. They have a stroke of approximately 1.5 mm, pleasant tactile and sound feedback. The F1 to F4 audio control keys are marked with a blue stripe.

The connector equipment is superior in terms of thickness. In addition to two USB-C ports with support for Thunderbolt 4.0 technology (40 Gb/s), the user also has two USB-A connectors, HDMI for connecting a monitor or projector, and a 3.5 mm audio jack connector. It can be seen that the designers have thought, and most of the connectors are concentrated on the left, so that possible cables do not interfere with the movement of the mouse. Leftists, of course, will have a different opinion on this.

Thanks to two Thunderbolt 4 ports and one HDMI 2.1 port, you can connect up to three external displays with 4K resolution. For example, you can make a video conference and use three screens on your own laptop display at the same time so that you can see information related to the topic of the meeting. The power supply with an input of 65 W is connected via USB-C. The battery with a capacity of 63 Wh lasts for 14-16 hours with adequate display brightness and work in Word.

PROS, CONS:

+ Design, performance, low weight, battery life, rich connector equipment
– The operating system and applications do not yet fully utilize the capabilities of the hardware
