Heavy rains, devastating floods and dozens of dead have been left behind by Hurricane Ellen, which is hitting the southeastern states of the USA. At the same time, millions of households were left without electricity.

From Tallahassee, Florida to Charlotte, North Carolina, heavy rains and strong winds caused massive damage across the US. More than 4 million households were left without electricity on Friday night (27.9.2024).

At least 20 people died in South Carolina, 15 in Georgia, 7 in Florida, one in North Carolina and one in Virginia, according to an AFP tally based on reports from local authorities.

Helen made landfall in northwest Florida on Thursday afternoon as a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale, with sustained winds of 145 mph.

It was the strongest hurricane ever to hit the area, according to expert Michael Lowry.

It has now weakened to a tropical storm, but authorities warn that the risk of flooding and landslides has not passed.
