Tires wear differently depending on the deck and the side they are mounted on. That’s why it’s good to rotate the tires between them after a certain number of kilometers.
Tire life can be extended by a fairly simple method: rotating the tires between them after a certain number of kilometers.
But, it must be taken into account the axle that provides the traction and the side on which they were previously mounted.
How to rotate between tires
When changing between tires, the direction in which they are to be rotated must be observed. An arrow is stamped on the side of the tire indicating the direction of rotation.
On front-wheel drive cars, this change between tires is done first in a line, then in an “X”.
For the first replacement, the front wheels are mounted on the back and the rear wheels on the front, keeping the same side.
Thus, the left-front tire is moved to the left-rear, and the left-rear to the left-front.
Then, when the second change is made, the tires move to the “X”.
Which means, the right-rear tire is replaced by the left-front one, and the right-front tire is mounted on the left-rear axle.
This pattern is then repeated for each replacement.
In the case of rear-wheel drive cars, the rear tires move to the same side as the front. However, the tires on the front axle will mount in an “X” on the rear axle.
Which means they will mount like this:
- the left-rear tire is moved to the left-front;
- the right-rear tire is moved to the right-front;
- the left-front tire is mounted on the right-rear;
- the right-front tire is mounted on the left-rear.
After some KM it is good to rotate the tires between them
The specialists’ recommendation is that, at least once a month, every driver should do a visual check of the condition of the tires.
And, if they notice that one or more of the wheels have more pronounced signs of wear, rotate them between them.
„It can extend the life of the tires if they are rotated with each other. Thus, every 10,000-15,000 km or if signs of irregular wear appear, the tires should be rotated”, mechanic Robert Marin explained to ProMotor.
So it’s good to rotate the tires after about 10,000 kilometers.
Because each of the four tires wears differently. For example, tires mounted on the front axle wear faster due to higher loads under acceleration and braking.
At what number of kilometers do you run the all season tires?
All season tires are a mix between winter and summer tires.
„All season tires are a compromise between summer and winter tires. Therefore, the rubber used is not of average quality, neither too soft nor too stiff. The problem is that it wears out twice as fast as the others, winter or summer. So you’d better run all-season tires on all sides twice as fast as regular tires. So after 5,000-6,000 kilometers, move them from side to side”, mechanic Robert Marin explained to ProMotor.
The move will be done as I described above, depending on the axle providing the traction. And it will repeat as many times as necessary, provided that the tire is not dulled beyond the maximum limit.
