Drivers who do not respect the speed limits imposed in the locality can lose their license even when they drive at just over 80 km/h. However, outside the maximum allowed limits are much higher. Here is the speed at which the permit is taken outside the town and what are the limits imposed by the Highway Code 2024.
Speed limits are imposed by the authorities to prevent road accidents. Thus, the roads are divided into two main categories: in the locality and outside the locality.
However, the roads that connect the localities are of several types: county road, national road, European road, express road and highway. And for each of these a different speed limit is imposed.
Speed limits on roads in Romania
In Romania, as in all European states, speed limits differ primarily depending on the type of road on which they apply.
Thus, the maximum speed allowed is:
- 50 km/h in the locality;
- 90 km/h on national or county roads;
- 100 km/h on European roads;
- 120 km/h on express roads;
- 130 km/h on the highway.
How much is the fine for breaking the legal speed limit?
Fine for speeding:
- 10-20 km/h: 2-3 penalty points;
- 21-30 km/h: 4-5 penalty points;
- 31-40 km/h: 6-8 penalty points;
- 41-50 km/h: 9-20 penalty points;
- over 50 km/h: 9-20 fine points + driving license suspension for 90 days.
- over 70 km/h: 9-20 fine points + driving license suspension for 120 days.
The fine point is set, starting January 1, 2024, at 165 lei. Therefore, the smallest fine for exceeding the speed limit is 330 lei, and the maximum is 3,300 lei.
At what speed is the out-of-town permit taken?
In the locality, if you are caught with 101 km/h, you will have your license suspended for 3 months. But, you can run out of license even at speeds of 80-90 km/h. Because in some areas, such as schools, hospitals, bus stops or pedestrian crossings, the maximum speed limit can be reduced to 30 km/h. So if you are recorded by the radar at over 80 km/h in such an area, it means that you have exceeded the speed limit by more than 50 km/h.
Outside the town, on a national or county road, those driving over 140 km/h will also remain pedestrians for 90 days. And if they exceed 160 km/h, the license will be suspended for 4 months.
In the case of express roads, the deficiency is retained for 3 months, for speeds over 170 km/h, or 4 months for speeds over 190 km/h.
On the highway, the right to drive is suspended for 90 days for drivers caught over 180 km/h and for 120 days for those who were over 200 km/h.
