A new diplomatic incident risks escalating within the North Atlantic Alliance. Angry reactions in the European capitals after, for Christmas, the Hungarian ambassador to NATO offered the foreign ministers an atlas with Great Hungary as a gift.
After the Croatian Foreign Minister reacted harshly to this scandalous gesture, the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirms that all other allied delegations, including Romania, received the same gift.
Offensive gift
It is about an atlas in which a map of Great Hungary appears from the time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, before the neighboring country lost the territories now included in the composition of other states, including Romania.
More precisely, on the map of “Greater Hungary” all the regions lost after the war are marked: Transylvania and part of Banat, Transcarpathia (now divided between Ukraine, Slovakia and Poland), Vojvodina (now part of Serbia), but also other regions as Burgenland, now in Austria.
After Gordan Grlić Radman, the foreign minister of Croatia, posted on his X account a message about this unusual and “problematic” Christmas gift from a Hungarian official, the story was picked up by the international press.
The Croatian minister also said that he will discuss the approach of the Hungarian ambassador to NATO with representatives from Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia.
“We will discuss this unacceptable act with our colleagues in Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia, because today’s geopolitically challenging era and full of security threats calls for more dialogue and cooperation between European and transatlantic allies “, the Croatian minister wrote on his X account.
The map of “Greater Hungary” includes Transylvania and part of the Banat, territories included in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which Romania regained at the end of the First World War, through the Treaty of Trianon. Moreover, as a result of this treaty, Hungary lost 72% of its territory.
