Attack on the democratic system

The investigating judge who is investigating the complaint against Begoña Gómez has decided to call none other than the President of the Spanish Government to testify as a witness. Contrary to what he himself claims, this will be a useless measure, which contributes nothing to the case, and impertinent, without legal justification. The magistrate has acted in a manner, at the very least, imprudent. Seeing the moment and the way in which he wants to make this statement, it is inevitable that more than one person will see political interests behind it. For the good of the democratic system, it is urgent, more than ever, that the higher judicial authorities correct this investigative frenzy that pours fuel on the fire of those who seek to alter the electoral result that brought Pedro Sánchez to Moncloa.

Indeed, it does not seem that Sánchez’s statement – despite the enormous damage to the reputation of the person concerned – can contribute anything new to the case. He is not obliged to testify, nor is there any indication that he participated in or knew about the events that are being investigated or that are supposed to be investigated. The Provincial Court has already ordered the judge in question to abandon several lines of investigation against Begoña Gómez and focus on just one. Despite this, he, undaunted, opens new lines every day in search of some crime to accuse Gómez of. Any rumour from far-right parties seems to be enough for him to agree to a measure without thinking about the effect it may have on the reputation and life of those under investigation.
