The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, condemns attacks that have injured several soldiers of the UN force UNIFIL in southern Lebanon.
Through his spokesman, he says that attacks on UN soldiers ‘could be a war crime’.
“Unifil peacekeepers remain in all positions and UN flags continue to fly,” UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.
“The Secretary-General reiterates that UNIFIL personnel and its bases must not be attacked. Attacks on peacekeepers are violations of international law, including international humanitarian law. It could be a war crime.’
The statement from the spokesperson was issued on Sunday evening.
It has happened after a day when the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, has directly called on the UN soldiers in southern Lebanon, where Israel and Hezbollah are at war, to get away.
“Mr. Secretary General, get the UNIFIL forces out of the danger zone. It should happen right now, immediately,” says Netanyahu in a video recording.
In recent days, five Unifil soldiers have been wounded in southern Lebanon.
Unifil announced on Thursday that an Israeli tank had fired at a guard tower near the town of Naqoura.
This led to two UN soldiers falling from the tower and being slightly injured.
Only on Friday, two more people were injured when shots were fired at their observation post at Naquora.
And on Friday evening, another UN soldier was wounded by gunfire. It is currently unknown who fired shots at the soldier.
The situation has escalated in Lebanon in recent weeks, with Israel sending ground forces into the southern part of the country.
At the same time, Israel has attacked targets from the air in many places – including in the capital, Beirut.
At the same time, the militant movement Hezbollah has fired rockets at Israel.
It is Hezbollah that Israel is at war with in Lebanon.
While hostilities continue in Lebanon and northern Israel, Israel also continues its war against the militant Hamas movement in Gaza.
