Atto 2 completes BYD’s electric car collection – at least the rear lights attract attention

Among the novelties of the Brussels auto show was the Byd Atto 2, which will complement the brand’s collection of small electric cars. The basic structure is the same e-Platform 3.0 as in the slightly larger Atto 3 and the smaller Dolphin. Notable competitors include, for example, the MG ZS EV and Stellantis’ smaller electric cars.

At least initially, the Atto 2 will be sold equipped with a front-mounted 130 kilowatt electric motor. The energy content of the lithium iron phosphate drive battery is 45.1 kilowatt hours, with a range of just over 300 kilometers. It is in the same category as, for example, the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric with a smaller battery. The performance is sufficient for the class of the car, as the acceleration from zero to hundred should be achieved in less than eight seconds. However, it has not been officially announced yet. The charging power and speeds are also still in the dark.

Surprisingly, it was reported in Brussels that the Atto 2 will also be sold with a larger driving battery. Its energy content is probably around 60 kilowatt hours, which extends the operating distance to 400 kilometers. Then the new Byd Atto 2 will be competitive, for example, with the Toyota Urban Cruiser that was also revealed to Europeans in Brussels.

In terms of design, Atto 2 is moderate, continuing the brand’s current line. A small fun detail is the Chinese knot rear lights, which also resemble the number 8. It is considered a lucky number in China. The roof seems to float over the windows and the adventure plastic protecting the body has been used quite a bit.

In the cockpit, as is typical for Byd, there is a touch screen in the middle of the dashboard that can be turned horizontally or vertically. Behind the steering wheel, the digital instrument panel is 8.8 inches, while some of Byd’s other smaller models settle for five inches. The center console even has physical switches for the main functions. Standard equipment also includes a panoramic glass roof. As a whole, the cockpit is more minimalistic than in many other Byd models, which is certainly intended to keep the price reasonable.

Byd Atto 2 is not one of the smallest on the market, because at 4.31 meters in length, it is somewhat the same size as the aforementioned Toyota. There is 400 liters of luggage space, which is almost a hundred liters more than the Urban Cruiser and its sister model, the e-Vitara. A completely flat floor makes it easier to use the trunk.

For now, it is unclear how the new Byd Atto 2 will be priced in Finland. It will be clearly cheaper than Atto 3. How the Atto 2 ranks against the Dolphin remains to be seen, unless it replaces that model entirely. At least in the initial phase, the energy content of the Atto 2’s driving battery is lower, which would indicate a cheaper price. We will get the answer in the next few months, when the results of the possible price war for electric cars and their effect on the pricing of the novelty will also be clear.
