Audi Avant RS2, we tried the Audi with the Porsche character

Do you ever get names confused? It can also happen with cars, for example is the Audi RS2 Avant really called that? Or Audi 80 Avant RS2 or Audi Avant RS 2? The exact name is “Audi Avant RS2” and this year he turns 30.

Born in 1994, this Audi was developed in collaboration with Porsche on the basis of the Audi Avant S2. It was in fact built in Zuffenhausen in collaboration with the Audi plant in Ingolstadt. Porsche AG supplied important components, such as brakes and wheels, while modifications to the engine control unit, turbocharger and intercooler, as well as an optimized exhaust tract, increased the output of the 2.2-liter five-cylinder engine to 232 kW (315 hp).

Our colleagues at Motor1.com Germania they were able to try one in “cliff green” (a color that has been retained in the current RS models). Here’s how it went.

Very Porsche

Today, the most enterprising marketers would probably call the Audi Avant RS2 a “Shooting Brake”. The bodywork is largely identical to that of the Audi 80 Avant, but the collaboration with Porsche led to some changes.

For example, the entire exterior design is close to that of the 911 964/993. The exterior mirrors (Porsche 964/993), direction indicators (993) and 17-inch wheels (964) are original Porsche parts. At the front, the air intakes in the bumper are divided into three sections to match the styling of the Porsche 993 Carrera 4S/Turbo and cool the intercooler and front brakes. Unlike the standard Avant, the rear license plate It’s moved down into the rear bumper, but there’s a panel in the tailgate that makes the taillights appear as a stripe. This is also a design reference to the 964/993 model series.

Furthermore, the Avant RS2, 4.48 meters long, can be recognized by its RS2 emblems with small Porsche lettering in the black-painted bonnet grille and on the tailgate. The brake calipers of the braking system, painted red, instead have a white Porsche lettering.

Our test

First impressions are of the cabin, where there’s a lot of wood and the sports seats add some charm. There white instrumentation It has an atypical design for Audi: the speedometer goes up to 300, the red area of the tachometer is at 7,000 rpm.

Audi Avant RS2 (1995), interior

The five-cylinder turbo accelerates the RS2 Avant from rest to 100 km/h 5.4 seconds and allows it to reach the maximum speed of 262 km/h. Today, many electric cars accelerate faster, but they can’t compare to an old five-cylinder Audi engine. In terms of driving dynamics it was not outstanding, but our colleagues immediately noted the excellent steering and excellent suspension, as well as the powerful (Porsche) brakes.

The 2.2-liter turbo revved up with a melodious sound. However, it only started to “play” from 4,000 rpm and the 400 Newton meters of maximum torque were already available from 2,800 rpm. Thanks then to all-wheel drive (Torsen self-locking center differential at the front and locking rear differential), the Avant RS2 handled corners very well.

Audi Avant RS2 (1995), road test

In two years of production, they were built 2.908 Before RS2 instead of the 2,200 expected, establishing the tradition of the RS models high performance.

When the RS2 was discontinued in 1995the Audi A4 reigned supreme. But that, including the first RS 4, is another story.
