A few months ago I had the opportunity to test the Audio-Technica ATH-AD500X headphones, now it’s time for a slightly more expensive model, ATH-AD700X.
At first glance, the ATH-AD700X look almost identical to the aforementioned ATH-AD500X. The differences in appearance are very minor. As with the ATH-AD500X, the ATH-AD700X remind me of the studio headphones I use during recording sessions with my band.
The ATH-AD700X headphones seem very light at first glance. This is partly due to their open design and lightweight aluminum housing with honeycomb perforation. They are also lightweight thanks to the openwork, self-adjusting 3D headband, which consists of two rods and two cushions (also openwork) that adhere to the head. The headphones weigh only 265 grams (without cable) and fit very well on the head and around the ears. You can afford to listen to them for hours. Additionally, the open design provides much better airflow, which is also important and improves comfort of use.
Audio-Technica ATH-AD700X are wired headphones, equipped with a three-meter cable made of highly conductive oxygen-free copper in flexible TPE insulation, which prevents it from tangling. The cable is equipped with a gold-plated mini jack plug. An adapter for a large jack is also included.
The headphones use 53 mm dynamic drivers with neodymium magnets and CCAW coils. The ATH-AD700X play very neutrally, which is to some extent a hallmark of the Audio-Technica brand. The sound in the entire frequency range is very even with a large dose of air and a wide and deep music scene. It was probably the music scene that made the first and very good impression on me. The bass is short and very selective, there is as much of it as needed, at least when it comes to my musical preferences. In the midrange, the sound is plastic with a large separation of the lines of individual instruments and vocals and their spatial location on the music scene. The upper frequencies are clearly accentuated and in my opinion have a large impact on the overall natural, but also bright sound characteristics of these headphones. This applies to virtually every music genre. I listened to them, among others, the soundtrack by Eric Serra for the film The Big Blue. Among others, the following sounds great on them: the Pat Metheny Group’s “Letter from Home” album, and in my opinion, the recently released solo album by Kerry King (Slayer guitarist) “From Hell I Rise” sounds absolutely brilliant. In the case of this album, the ATH-AD700X headphones allow you to look behind the wall of sound of distorted guitars and focus on the second or third plane.
In my opinion, the ATH-D700X are headphones that were definitely created for enjoying music and sound as the manufacturer released it from the studio. In addition to their brilliant natural sound, the spatiality of the sound they offer was impressive. It is all the more surprising that the headphones are available at a really reasonable price.
