There was not as much sparkle on the ice as in the stands. In the meeting, Eisbären Berlin won over Union Auschwitz 4:1.

The fans of the Polish club did not wait for anything and reminded their opponent of the horrors of the Second World War with a choreo. For the banner, Auschwitz was punished by the Champions League for a political gesture.

“Welcome to the city of your greatest crime.” This was written on a banner raised by fans of the Polish hockey club Unia Oświęcim. It was clear that because of the past, it would be a closely watched fight.

In the middle of the chorea, the inscription “German death camps” was depicted in the colors of the German flag, the background was black barbed wire. An estimated 1.4 million people perished in the Auschwitz complex between 1940 and 1945, 90 percent of them Jews.

Representatives of Nazi Germany, who occupied Polish territory at the time, were responsible for their deaths. The club was fined 2,000 euros for the banner.

The management of the Champions League announced the fine on the official website. “The Auschwitz Union was fined 2,000 euros for hanging a banner with a political message.” The match itself ended with the home team losing 1:4.

The Berlin hockey players themselves visited the memorial in Auschwitz on Friday. The club gave German fans recommendations before the trip. He warned them to be sensitive. “We don’t have to discuss the fact that this is not an ordinary match,” said the Berlin club’s spokesman Leo Imme before the match.
