CANBERRA – The Australian government intervened on Friday to block another attempt to mine uranium in a national park.
As The Financial Times writes, this almost ended the decades-long dispute over one of the world’s largest deposits of high-quality uranium.
Energy Resources Australia, majority-owned by Rio Tinto, has applied to renew its mining license at a site called Jabiluka, sparking outrage from the Miraro, a local indigenous community.
The original development plan was halted in the 1990s after a major public outcry.
But the rising price of uranium and public debate over whether Australia should adopt nuclear power have shifted attention to Jabiluka.
Minority investors in ERA have been calling for the license to be extended and development to begin in recent weeks.
