While not so long ago, parents refused to register on Facebook, today it is not uncommon for children and adolescents to have one or more accounts on each of the most important social networks. Between TikTok, Instagram and X, they spend a considerable amount of time updating their profileto communicate with each other and to scroll. A time-consuming pastime, and also considered stupid, at an age when the brain is in a period of growth. Not to mention dangers like cyber-harassment and sexual predators. Rather than limiting access to platforms for under-16s, Australia wants to ban them completely. This Thursday, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese pledged during a press conference to crack down on these sites, which he accuses of not being protective of young users.
This time it’s for mothers and fathers. Social media is doing a lot of harm to children and I have decided to put a stop to it. (…) Responsibility will not fall on parents or young people. There will be no penalties for users.
These are the firms which will be responsible to ensure that Australian users are of the legal age of over 16, and not parents who “are worried about the safety of their children online“.
