Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer announced his resignation. The head of the Cabinet of Ministers on the evening of Saturday, January 4, reported on the social network X about the failure of coalition negotiations between the conservative Austrian People’s Party (AP), of which he is chairman, and the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SDPA).

“We had long and honest negotiations. It is impossible to agree with the SDPA on key issues. The People’s Party stands by its promises: we will not agree to measures aimed at social benefits and business, as well as the introduction of new taxes,” Nehammer said. “Therefore, we are stopping negotiations with the SDPA and will not continue them,” he added.

“As Federal Chancellor, as well as as Chairman of the People’s Party, in the next few days I will leave (my posts – Ed.),” the head of the Cabinet noted, adding that he wants to ensure an orderly transition period.

Austria is likely to hold new elections

According to Reuters, new parliamentary elections are likely to be planned in Austria.

Earlier, on January 3, the New Austria and Liberal Forum (NEOS) party withdrew from the negotiations, thus failing to form a three-party government.

“It is obvious that the destructive forces within the SDPA have gained the upper hand,” said Karl Nehammer. He also ruled out any dialogue with the far-right Austrian Freedom Party (FAZ). “I am deeply convinced that radicals do not offer a solution to any problem,” he concluded.

Victory for right-wing populists

Elections to the National Council (the lower house of the Austrian parliament) took place on September 29, 2024. The right-wing populist Freedom Party of Austria won with 28.85 percent of the vote. The ruling ANP took second place with a score of 26.3 percent, the Social Democrats won the support of 21.1 percent of voters, and NEOS gained just over nine percent.

APS leader Herbert Kickl did not meet the desire of the APS and SDPA to form a coalition with right-wing populists. Therefore, the Conservatives, Social Democrats and Liberals began negotiations in November. The discussions were intense. Economic and tax policies, in particular, became particularly hot topics.
