Authenticity and originality are among the most important basic principles in museum collections. Authentic – one that corresponds to the original, is based on a primary source, is unquestionable, indisputable, accurate, reliable, genuine, has proven its origin. The original is given a sacred value, while the copies are valued as secondary, as they often do not have a direct connection to a specific cultural heritage, but are still used in museums as material in the context of learning and as a framework for creating certain content.

In the first scientific readings in the museum Riga Stock Exchange in the form of lectures and talks, both museum collections and groups of individual objects will be discussed from theory to practice, taking directly art objects and collections as a basis. The aim of the event is to analyze the links between authenticity and different forms of cultural heritage. Exploring this interrelationship provides an opportunity to understand our relationship with cultural-historical memory, belonging and identity, which interact with social, political, aesthetic and ethical dimensions.

After the exhibition curator of the Department of Foreign Art of the Latvian National Museum Mare Heimrātes-Patāčini gave a speech at 10.15 a lecture by Lorenz Winkler-Horacek (Free University of Berlin) will open at 10:15 a.m. The sight of one illuminates the otherin which the professor will reveal the connections between ancient sculpture and contemporary art. The exposition of the collection of casts of ancient sculptures at the Free University of Berlin is one of the first places that confronted casts of ancient sculptures with contemporary art. Since the opening of the Berlin collection in 1988, along with archaeological exhibitions and projects, more than 120 presentations, installations and events have taken place with the participation of contemporary artists and photographers.

Nowadays, casts of sculptures are freed from ideologically charged ideas and beliefs. It allows us to see them for what they are: important tools in archeology and art history research and exploration, and excellent means of engaging contemporary art with the past.
