Authorities warn: Dangerous chemicals in dropshipping products

In an audit, the Chemicals Agency found lead in electronics and dangerous chemicals in plastic materials.

Dropshipping is a business model where companies claim that they have a Swedish online store and a warehouse in Sweden but actually import the goods from abroad. Most often, the products come from countries outside the EU, and according to the three authorities, the goods rarely meet the safety requirements.

The problem with dropshipping, unlike platforms like Temu and Shein, is that you can be tricked into thinking you’re buying from a Swedish company with a Swedish warehouse. It is only afterwards that you realize that the gadget you ordered comes from the other side of the globe, where the safety requirements are not as high as in the EU. – Daniel Ahlström, inspector at the Chemicals Inspectorate.

The Swedish Electrical Safety Authority also sees an increased risk in shopping from dropshipping companies because the products often do not meet the requirements for the Swedish market. Peter Cedmer, inspector at the authority, also explains that it is difficult to hold someone responsible because the manufacturer is often unknown. Dropshipped electrical products also have a higher risk of electric shock and fire.

The Swedish Consumer Agency has previously warned about the risks of dropshipping. Recently, they have received several complaints from consumers about dropshipping companies that market their products with a certain quality that they then do not keep. Previously, the authority also reviewed ten dropshipping companies that consumers should avoid.

Henric Jonsson, legal advisor at Konsument Europa, explains that when you buy from a dropshipping company that sends the goods from, for example, China, you as a consumer become a direct importer.

– You think you are shopping from a company that is based in the EU and then the security requirements would apply, but in fact you are shopping directly from the company in China. Then you become a direct importer and the products come in that way, he says.
