Throughout this period, the degree of occupancy of the halls exceeded 80%, most of the performances in the repertoire being sold-out from the first moments of the tickets being put on sale.
The beginning of the new season was marked by the high-impact presence of the “IL Caragiale” National Theater at the 9th edition of Reunions of Romanian National Theaters from both banks of the Prut, from Chisinau, with three representative shows from TNB’s current repertoire, which were applauded on the open stage by the enthusiastic audience from the capital of the Republic of Moldova: The king dies, Gertrude and A few people away from you.
The TNB show The silent escapedirected and performed by the actress Oana Pellea, enjoyed a well-deserved and prestigious success during the two special performances held in September at the Théâtre des Capucins in Luxembourg.
On October 4, the first premiere of the new season took place: the show – documentary Eichmann’s trial by Motti Lerner, directed by the actor Mihai Calin (directorial debut!) and presented in the world premiere at Sala Atelier of TNB. “Eichmann’s trial is a play about an event that took place in Israel in 1961. But the point of the play is not to reenact the event as a history lesson. It has completely different, more important purposes: one moral, one educational and one social. (…) This play is a moral statement that, in today’s times, is extremely necessary for the whole world” – this is how playwright Motti Lerner defines the message of his play. A necessary history lesson, but also a call to awaken consciences to prevent an unfortunate repetition of it, the play Eichmann’s trialstaged with intense emotional participation by an excellent team of actors, is aimed at both adult and adolescent viewers, high school students and their teachers. It is no coincidence that the National Theater show with Eichmann’s trial was carried out within The tnb.edu program – program developed from the conviction that the Theatre, par excellence an art of encounter, can complement and cover an important side in the educational process, the emotional-cognitive and the direct experience.
But what are the latest news of the current season?
The return, after 32 years, of the director Andrei Sherbanat the National Theatre, to stage the play on the stage of the Studio Hall Mary Stuart by Robert Icke “… it is not just a premiere, but a cultural event of great magnitude. show Mary Stuart comes with the promise of an intense exploration of great historical and personal conflicts, under the baton of a director who has left his mark on world theatre. This is an important moment for Romanian theatre, marking the return of a master who continues to fascinate and challenge new generations of spectators” – says journalist Radu Caranfil (Puterea, 20 Sept. 2024). And Andrei Șerban, in his recent interview with Horia Ghibutiu (New Money magazine, Oct. 11, 2024): “I am returning after 30 years to National with an extremely ambitious project – Mary Stuarta contemporary adaptation of Schiller’s famous historical play. It is the drama of two strong women, Mary and Elizabeth – two queens, of Scotland and of England, respectively. Both come to a confrontation with the most extreme consequences of power. Mary is a prisoner because she plotted to obtain the crown of England, and Elizabeth, although she is on the throne, feels herself captive, dependent on the will of the crowd, the manipulations of corrupt politicians or a prisoner of her own ambitions for power. Conclusion: “The royal crown is a jeweled prison cell.” A play about the plight of these women, fascinated by each other, caught in a complex web of attraction, rivalry and jealousy. A divided nation, when history loses its meaning and everything seems to be driven by chance, a truth of all times as well as of the moment we live in now.
Şerban has always been attracted to contemporary reinterpretations of great classical texts, and the collaboration with Robert Icke, one of the most talented British directors of his generation, represents a summit meeting between two different theatrical visions. Mary Stuart directed by Robert Icke premiered at the Almeida Theater in London in 2016, and the combination of modern scenery, accessible language and timeless themes contributed to the play’s critical success.

director Felix Alexa he is already a regular on the stages of the National, where we will find him again this season with a staging of the play in one act, Off the seaby the Polish playwright Sławomir Mroźek. The text was written in the 1960s, when censorship was established in Poland, and the author was forced to find various devious ways to express his convictions against the Soviet regime. This dark comedy follows the adventure of three castaways who try to find a democratic way to decide which of the three will be sacrificed so that the other two can survive… The ethical dilemma is supported by increasingly unusual arguments, until the intervention of a postman in passing and an old servant take the play to a funny-surreal exaggeration, with an unexpected denouement. In the role of the 5 male characters, the director Felix Alexa (who also signs the musical illustration and lighting design) cast the actors Şerban Pavlu, Emilian Mârnea, Andrei Finți, Eduard Cîrlan and on ….Victoria I say. Decorations: Stefan Caragiu. Costume: Liliana Cenea.
Another expected directorial presence is that of the young artist Botond Nagy who mounted for the first time on a stage of the Bucharest National in March 2023, the show Mother’s word progress sounded terribly false by Matei Vișniec. In November, Botond Nagy begins rehearsals of an extremely challenging text – Prophet Elijahby another contemporary Polish playwright, Tadeusz Slobodzianek (born in 1955, Slobodzianek is also a director, theater critic, pedagogue and director of the Drama Theater in Warsaw, author, among other things, of the well-known play Our classplayed by several theaters in Romania). The premiere is estimated for February 2025.
Rehearsals will begin in December Secondarya new show by author al Alexandra Badea, playwright and director of her own text.
“The meeting with the TNB band during the rehearsals for “Exile” and the communication I had with the actors inspired me a new project, based on a text I wrote for them, says Alexandra Badea. The theme of the show is the existential crisis, the secret, the repression, the feeling of guilt, the collective trauma that welded or disintegrated a group, fragility, solidarity, individualism. It is the story of a community of people who have been working together for many years, disrupted by an event that causes a chain of conflicts. Events from the past reappear in the form of flash-backs, in which we discover the toxicity and complexity of the relationships between them, the games of power and dominance, the ambiguity, the difficulty of separating the intimate plan from the professional plan”.
director Victor Ioan Frunza returns, in turn, after a long absence from the stages of the National, with an ambitious project, based on texts by Shakespeare, for which he is now preparing a suitable cast. We will return with details as soon as they are finalized.
So, the series of exciting performances, supported by the most brilliant casts, continues at the National this autumn as well, waiting for the same enthusiastic audience that we have become accustomed to in recent seasons.
