The survey found that a staggering 89 percent of those surveyed did not realize that artificial sweeteners could cause migraines.

A Lloyd’s Pharmacy survey of 500 Britons last year revealed some unexpected potential triggers, pinpointing artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, which nearly one in 10 participants identified as a migraine trigger, according to the Mirror.

These sugar alternatives are often used in products such as Diet Coke. Consequently, experts at Lloyd’s Pharmacy recommend that people prone to migraines should stick to water for hydration.

The survey found that a staggering 89 percent of those surveyed did not realize that artificial sweeteners could trigger migraines, suggesting that many may be inadvertently contributing to their own suffering.

Migraine, a condition that can seriously affect daily life, has a wide range of triggers that vary from individual to individual. Potential culprits are believed to include stress, hormonal fluctuations, noise, certain smells, alcohol, dehydration and lack of sleep.

However, lesser-known ingredients in foods and drinks can trigger migraines – such as those commonly found in diet sodas.
