B. Kikilias for volunteers: “It takes a lot of strength of soul and special courage to offer by risking one’s life”

At the inauguration of the new facilities of the Association of Civil Protection Volunteers Ag. Stefanou Attica was attended by the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Vassilis Kikilias.

The minister took a tour of the facilities, spoke with volunteers of the Association, which numbers over 70 people, and thanked them for their valuable contribution during this year’s very difficult fire season. Mr. Kikilias also spoke about the ministry’s planning in terms of supporting and strengthening volunteer groups, both in terms of equipment and logistical infrastructure.

As he announced, once the Fire Brigade will start receiving new vehicles through AEGIS in the coming months (before the fire season 160 vehicles will have been received and in August they will have reached 235), the existing fire engines that are in good condition situation will gradually begin to pass to the voluntary groups.

“One that almost 200 fire engines from AEGIS are received in May, before the beginning of the fire fighting season, and as many more, in the next year, in our effort to strengthen the volunteer groups, from the fire engines that the Corps has checked, when they are brought to good condition, they will slowly pass to volunteer groups, in Attica and all over Greece, so that your effort can be strengthened”. In addition, he pointed out that through the AEGIS program volunteers will receive for the first time 4,500 uniforms and full equipment for the next fire fighting season, thus strengthening the operational capacity of volunteer organizations and the Fire Department.

“It takes a lot of soul and a special mental fortitude to give voluntarily to one’s fellow men, even risking one’s life. I am very proud of you. I know that for six months you have been fighting huge battles”, emphasized the minister, noting that volunteering shows that Greek society is becoming aware and understands how important giving and altruism are in the effort to manage and deal with natural disasters.

The Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection expressed his deep appreciation to the donors who contributed to the construction of the new facilities and the provision of equipment. “This is an important act that shows that Greek society is becoming aware and understands how important the contribution of our firefighters and volunteers is to the task. These people have not stopped day and night for six months now fighting the flames to protect our fellow citizens“, said V. Kikilias.

The event was attended by, among others, the deputy chief of the Fire Brigade, Nikolaos Roumeliotis, the mayor of Dionysos, Katerina Maichosoglou, representatives of the Local Government and a number of volunteers.
