Baby killed in shipwreck in English Channel

A baby died Thursday night off the French coast when a boat packed with people trying to reach England illegally sank, French authorities said Friday.

During an operation to recover migrants who had fallen overboard off Wissant in the Pas-de-Calais department, “sixty-five people were recovered without injury”.

“Following a search, a baby was found unconscious in the water and pronounced dead,” added maritime authorities in the English Channel and North Sea region.

The rescued victims and the baby’s body were taken to the French city of Bologna do Mar.

Authorities are maintaining active searches to try to find more victims of the incident.
