Baltic states’ common power plant could be operational by 2030

Lithuania would like to build a new shared power plant together with Latvia and Estonia, which, according to Lithuanian Energy Minister Žygimantas Vaičiūnas, could be ready by 2030, but the plant will not be nuclear.

Vaiciunas explained that we are talking about a power plant that could be built as soon as possible, while according to the assessment prescribed in the National Strategy for Energy Independence of Lithuania, the practical implementation of small nuclear reactors will become possible only after 2030. The minister’s words are quoted Rus.ERR.

“Low-power nuclear power plants will probably become possible no earlier than 2032-2033, meaning other technologies will be required,” the minister said.

Earlier, the Lithuanian government announced plans to approach Estonia and Latvia with a proposal to jointly build a new power plant to ensure flexible power generation and energy security.
