Ban on imported software is not a disaster: expert talks about the impact of US sanctions on Russia

According to Alexander Khachiyan, international systems were most in demand in the automation of enterprises, industrial, mining and other similar sectors. In Russia, its own software in these areas was quite basic, and in industry, solutions from SAP, Oracle and other large foreign companies were mainly used.

“Therefore, there were no comparable solutions on the domestic market: it was impossible to quickly find a replacement, since significant efforts were needed in development and adaptation. This does not mean that all activities stopped, but it was necessary to invest a lot of additional resources both in import substitution and in development to a new level,” Khachiyan said.

Another solution was the collaboration between a number of major government agencies involved in construction, such as the Ministry of Digital Development, Dom.RF and Rostec, which combined their efforts on the basis of a common large budget and attracted IT integrators to develop and import-substitute the necessary solutions.

“As for solutions for the full cycle of production management of construction solutions, each of the major players in the market has already developed its own solutions and continues to develop them and offer them to the market,” the expert said.

Some solutions can still be used by Russian companies if they have an office abroad. Khachiyan noted that this includes, for example, analytical solutions such as Google 360 Analytics (no longer available for domestic businesses).

If we talk about more mass solutions, such as Notion, many domestic developers are already creating analogues of this service, for example Teamly, Younote. After the announcement of Notion’s departure from Russia, many founders of similar projects reported registration peaks and an increase in requests, as well as the need to scale servers, the expert specified.

A similar situation is happening with import substitution of Microsoft, which has its own server operating systems and rules, says the founder of AWG. Russian IT specialists are constantly looking for workarounds to work with them, often buying licenses through international jurisdictions.

“This carries a certain amount of risk and stress, since it is impossible to find a replacement for this operating system in the office space. Domestic developments of Linux-based OS are not yet capable of conquering the mass market. For corporations, the transition to them is possible, but for ordinary users it is still difficult,” Khachiyan added.

In addition, Microsoft solutions such as Power BI are excellent analytical tools that have also become unavailable, but alternatives have emerged, such as Yandex DataLens, the expert adds.

Khachiyan also mentioned Telemost, which he believes has begun to catch up with Zoom in terms of quality. The Russian developer recently announced a global update to its engine and codecs, making their video communications more stable and lag-free.

Earlier, RB.RU reported on 10 services that announced their departure from Russia due to US sanctions that came into force on September 12.
