The Bank of Portugal (BdP) said this Saturday in a statement, regarding the choice of its former administrator Hélder Rosalino as Secretary General of the Government, that it “does not assume any expenses” relating to his remuneration and that “it is even up to the General Secretariat reimburse the Bank of Portugal for any component of the social protection regime that has been processed directly”.
In a clarification “with regard to allegations made public today”, the BdP says that “the Government approved Decree-Law No. 43-B/2024, of July 2, 2024, on the General Secretariat of the Government” and that “the remuneration status of the directors of this General Secretariat was changed by the Government, through Decree-Law No. 114-B/2024, of December 26, 2024”, to ensure that “Banco de Portugal does not have any competence nor did it have any intervention in these diplomas”.
The institution also states in the same note that “it does not assume any expenses related to the remuneration of the Secretary General of the Government, as follows from the Eurosystem rules on the prohibition of monetary financing” and that “as is legally stipulated, it is also up to the General Secretariat to reimburse the Bank of Portugal for any component of the social protection regime that has been processed directlyas a result of the applicable legal framework”.
He also adds that “this information was transmitted by the governor of the Bank of Portugal to the Government, when contacted informally about this topic”.
Hélder Rosalino was chosen as Secretary General of the Government, a position he will assume from January 1st, after the supervisor responsible for the payments area at Banco de Portugal left the position he held at the beginning of September due to his unavailability for a new position. mandate.

The same publication also said that the Government asked the BdP to pay Rosalino’s salary as Secretary General of the Government and that this would have been accepted by Mário Centeno in a first contact, but that there had not yet been a decision.
