At the turn of the year BankID was approved as a valid identification method with EU authorities. Authorities in other EU countries now have 12 months to implement support for BankID in their e-services. According to BankID themselves, the process can go faster than that.
Using BankID abroad should facilitate, for example, registration with tax authorities, educational institutions or healthcare facilities, which is particularly practical if you study or work abroad.
BankID can already be used with certain public authorities i 15 European countries. Finnish Traficom and Estonian e-services are among the connected actors right now. However, it is unclear exactly which authorities accept BankID at the moment, according to the authority for digital management (DIGG).
That’s how it works
To use BankID internationally, some extra steps are required. Visit the authority’s login page and look for options such as “Method of identification for foreigners” or “EU eID”. Select Sweden from the list of connected countries if available. Click on BankID (or Freja eID, where supported) and follow the instructions to generate a QR code that you scan with your BankID app.
