BARCELONA – Mass tourism, especially in the central districts of Barcelona, has forced the city authorities to make a decision that should deter tourists and return the city to its residents.
They will increase the price of the tourist tax for passengers who come by cruise ship on one-day trips and stay in the city for less than 12 hours.
The mayor of the city of Barcelona stated that the tourist tax for cruise ship passengers currently amounts to seven euros per day, but he did not say by how much this amount will be increased. The increase in the price of the tax for staying in Barcelona will apparently be considerable, especially for tourists who come on day trips.
In the case of tourists staying for less than 12 hours, the city’s public space is practically used without any benefit for the city, while the citizens suffer the most.
Tourists must respect the destination they are coming to, said the mayor of this city. He also said that tourists, not taxpayers, should pay for local projects such as introducing air conditioning in schools and the like.
The city authorities have already decided to ban renting apartments to tourists until 2029, in order to reduce the lack of housing for the local population.
All approved short-term rental licenses, 10,101 to be exact, and those on platforms like Airbnb, will not be renewed when they expire in November 2028.
