“Good for Germany”, declared Chancellor Olaf Scholz when he commented on the plans for a snap election in February for the first time on Wednesday afternoon.
Originally, the Social Democratic chancellor had expected an election in March or April after his coalition collapsed a week ago, but after pressure from conservative challenger Friedrich Merz in particular, a vote of no confidence will now be held in mid-December. It is expected that Scholz will lose, after which the Germans will go to the polls on February 23.
