Prague – The common goal of the government and the opposition Pirates should be to prevent extremists and populists from coming to power. It is not only about agreeing on the program, but also about sharing responsibility for our country. Minister of Culture Martin Baxa (ODS) said this today in Nova TV’s discussion program Za five minut twelve. The chairman of the Pirátů parliamentary club, Jakub Michálek, said in the discussion that he does not reject it, but that cooperation needs to be set up anew so that previous problems do not repeat themselves.
At the suggestion of Prime Minister Petr Fiala (ODS), Ivan Bartoš (Pirates) was dismissed from the post of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Regional Development at the end of September. The reason was the unmanaged digitization of construction management. After the Prime Minister’s decision, the Pirates announced their departure to the opposition and criticized the way their then chairman was dismissed.
“I hope that not all bridges are destroyed. The pirates did not have to leave the government,” said Baxa today. Prime Minister Fiala also told ČTK three weeks ago that his hand towards the Pirates remains “outstretched and with open arms”. He added that he saw no reason for the radical departure of the Pirates from the government, clashes and harm.
“We reacted adequately to Prime Minister Fiala’s rude behavior, who called Bartoš off by phone, saying that he would announce it at a press conference in 15 minutes. We expected more decency from him,” Michálek said today. According to the chairman of the Pirátů parliamentary club, potential cooperation cards are handed out by the voters. “We will act according to the priorities of our program, any cooperation will be decided by the new management,” he added.
The former mayor of Prague and current deputy mayor Zdeněk Hřib became the president of the Pirates last week. He wants to reform the party, without which, according to him, it will not be able to succeed in the parliamentary elections next year. Michálek considers it a “turning point”.
“We want to be a third party that is neither populist nor right-wing. We will be tough with the government, but constructive and fair. The government is trying in a number of areas, but we know where there are problematic things, such as the area of housing,” said Michálek.
President Petr Pavel accepted Prime Minister Fiala’s proposal to dismiss Bartoš on September 30. A day later, the pirate Minister for Legislation, Michal Šalomoun, handed in his resignation. Following an agreement with Fiala, he left the government on October 11. The head of diplomacy, Jan Lipavský, also submitted his resignation, but took it back after a meeting with the prime minister and continues in the government as a non-partisan. “I agree with his foreign policy, but I don’t like changing his jersey at all,” Michálek added today.
