BAYKAR, Turkey’s leading technology and defense industry company, made an important decision. According to the information in TRT Haber, BAYKAR, which produces the domestic and national BM-100 engine for UAV systems with an investment of 300 million dollars, will use this engine in TB2 UAVs. In addition, the company will develop turbofan and turboprop engines for the KIZILELMA and AKINCI UAVs and put them into mass production.
BAYKAR is one of the brands that exports the highest number of UCAVs to the most countries in the world. So far, they have exported Bayraktar TB2 to 33 countries and AKINCI TİHA to 10 countries. So far, they have managed to produce more than 700 UAV platforms of various types.
TRT HaberIn the article in , it is stated that the Canadian-made Rotax 912 propeller engine is generally used in TB2s, which are BAYKAR’s most exported model, and that the engines of TB2s that have completed a certain number of flight hours should also be replaced. It is planned to save 6 million dollars annually by producing BAYKAR’s own TB2 engine.
BAYKAR, on the other hand, invested 300 million dollars for TB2s and produced the prototype of the BM-100 engine. In his statement to Capital, BAYKAR General Manager Haluk Bayraktar announced in July that the development activities of the BM-100 engine to be used in the Bayraktar TB2 SİHA had been completed and mass production had started. The BM-100 engine will not have the disadvantages of the Rotax 912. In addition, the problems experienced in the embargo imposed by Canada in the past will not occur again with the production of domestic engines.
BAYKAR is using a domestically produced turbo diesel engine for its new TB3 UCAV. However, AKINCI and KIZILELMA UAVs require turboprop and turbofan engines.
In addition, BAYKAR company also supplies turboprop engines for large Akıncı UAVs and turbofan engines for Kızılelma jet UAVs. The production of these engines, purchased from Ukrainian Ivchenko Progress and Motor Sich companies, may be interrupted by the Ukraine-Russia war. In addition, these Soviet-style engines also have some disadvantages.
BAYKAR plans to produce its own turboprop and turbofan engines for Akıncı and Kızılelma. It is also stated that these newly produced engines will comply with NATO standards and will not contain some of the disadvantages of Ukrainian engines.
