At the moment, beans are being harvested, so both the soup and prebrana will be from those harvested in the fields of Vojvodina. The gardeners who planted it say that the harvest is about two weeks earlier due to the tropical climate. Those who have already harvested the new crop in Bačka and Banat say that they are mostly satisfied with the yields, bearing in mind the climatic conditions in which the beans ripened, but note that there were more beans last year, even though last year the climate was dry and it was supercell a storm.
What do paoris say?
Prokica Kobilarev, a long-time producer of beans from Zmajevo near Vrbas, told Dnevnik that he had a solid yield, about 1.8 tons of green beans per hectare, and 2.1 tons of colorful beans per hectare. It arrived faster than last year, but he sowed it earlier because of the warm spring, already on April 24. In previous years, he sowed after May 1.
Beans were damaged this year by the heat that was on June 15 before this African heat. It first caused damage to lower yields, and then the current high daily temperatures, although the beans matured under the irrigation system.
Kobilarev says that he will sow beans next year as well, and he does not yet know where he will sell this year’s beans because he needs to finish them. Also, the perennial bean producer from Ravni Topolovac in the municipality of Žitište, Dragan Lakić, is not very satisfied with this year’s yield, and he got about 600 kilograms per acre. Yields could be higher, but the climate spoiled the crop, because beans like alternating warm weather and rain. Lakić says that he sowed sulfur and did the entire production of beans using mechanization. His beans were also under an irrigation system because without water, he says, it is no longer worth producing any vegetables, especially without an irrigation system, there must not be vegetables that are grown in bulk.
Beans are still lacking in yields, but for now everything is chill
As for the sale of beans, Lakić says he is not worried. He sells everything to buyers from home and is generally satisfied with the price. A kilogram of wholesale sulfur costs 450 dinars. The new crop has yet to arrive on the markets. It is certainly available in supermarkets, but it is probably not bought. Beans, as the most favorite domestic dish, are not enjoyed during the summer heat, but are prepared when it cools down. It is best eaten during winter. A kilogram of the city is sold in large markets from 300 to 320 dinars. At the same time, white costs from 250 to 450 dinars, and large white for 300 dinars per kilogram.
As assistant professor Dr. Đorđe Vojnović from the Faculty of Agriculture in Novi Sad emphasized, we have beans for now. More precisely, we have 1.1 tons of beans per hectare, and we could do twice as much. In our agroecological conditions, in unfavorable years like last year 2023, the negative effects of drought and high temperatures led to significantly lower yields of beans. They were, on average, 1.1 tons per hectare, said Dr. Vojnović.
However, with the application of modern agricultural techniques and the use of certified seed material, said Dr. Vojnović, it is possible to achieve yields of at least two to two and a half tons per hectare without any problems. In 2023, there were 7,035 hectares under beans, from which 7,865 tons were obtained. The average yield per hectare was 1.1 tons per hectare, said assistant professor Dr. Đorđe Vojnović.
