Beautifully produced onions; vegetable gardener (un)satisfied

Vegetable grower Perica Jović from Bački Gradište, who grows onions, faces challenges and pleasures in his production during the summer. Despite the unfavorable weather conditions, he achieved a good crop of onions, removing 60 tons from the hectare. Jović expressed his satisfaction with the quality and yields, stressing that the change of hot and cold weather did not favor the port, but he managed to achieve good results by applying appropriate agricultural techniques.

Jović likes it mechanically

Jović pointed out that winter onions were sown at the end of September, which turned out to be a good decision, because the vegetable growers who sowed them earlier due to the warm autumn had problems with the plant going to seed. This year, for the first time, Jović has a sure buyer for his onions, which brings him relief, because onions cannot stand for long in the winter. However, although he has not yet started delivery, he is worried about the dizzying drop in the price, which currently amounts to between 18 and 20 dinars per kilogram wholesale. In large markets, the price of onions ranges from 50 to 80 dinars per kilogram, while at Futoška market in Novi Sad it is sold for 70 to 80 dinars.

In the production of onions, Jović relies mainly on machines, but he also needs seasonal workers for hoeing, which he finds difficult in the village, so he hires workers from the side for a daily wage of 3,000 dinars. He points out that onions are demanding for production, they must be sown on first-class arable land, and production requires precision and meticulousness. According to the books, you can get up to 100 tons of onions per hectare, but professional vegetable growers generally achieve yields of up to 90 tons, while Jović gets up to 60 tons on his fields.

In addition to winter onions, Jović also has spring onions, which he sowed in March, and which he will harvest in about a month due to the rapid vegetation due to high temperatures. Spring onions will be able to be stored during the winter, expecting a better price. In addition to onions, Jović also produces peppers, corn and soybeans.

Temperature vicissitudes

Jović emphasized that he mostly does all the work himself because his successors do not see the perspective in agriculture. He points out that agriculture is full of effort and uncertainty due to climate change, which makes the risk high. It’s almost not worth working, considering the climatic conditions and the efforts that need to be made.

Jović is a versatile farmer who deals with different crops. In addition to onions, he also sows peppers, corn and soybeans. Although agriculture is full of challenges, he manages to produce quality products. Climate changes significantly affect its production, but Jović tries to achieve good results by applying appropriate agrotechnical measures and adjusting production to the conditions.

He emphasizes the importance of proper sowing time and appropriate agricultural techniques to achieve good yields. He believes that the key lies in adapting production to weather conditions and applying modern methods in agriculture. Jović faces problems such as falling prices and a lack of labor, but he does not give up his agricultural activity.

Climate change, with the alternation of warm and cold weather, represents a great challenge for onion production. Jović emphasizes that in winter onions are particularly sensitive to such changes and require careful application of agrotechnical measures. Despite the challenges, he manages to produce quality onions, which confirms his many years of work and experience in agriculture.

The challenges are numerous, and the bow is black

Onion prices are currently low, which represents an additional challenge for producers. Jović hopes that the market will stabilize and prices will rise, allowing vegetable growers to make an adequate profit. He points out that it is important to have a secure buyer for the products. But he also emphasized that it is necessary to work on improving the market and better organization of sales.

He is an example of a dedicated farmer who, despite all the problems, is trying to produce quality products and ensure the survival of his production.

In the end, Jović points out that agriculture requires a lot of effort, investment and adaptation to climatic conditions. But he remains faithful to his profession, hoping for better days for farmers.
