Because of the assistance system, drivers use mobile phones more and more?!

A driver is more likely to pay attention to things other than driving if the car has an assistance system that can automatically accelerate, brake and steer. This is shown by two new studies conducted in the United States of America.

More precisely, it is about the Pilot Assist system (Volvo) and Tesla’s Autopilot. They are advertised as a way to make driving safer and more enjoyable, but in practice they mean that many drivers are instead checking their mobile phones, eating food or even shaving behind the wheel. The cars warn at regular intervals that the driver must touch the steering wheel – otherwise the system will turn off, but drivers quickly adapted to the warnings and continued to keep their attention on things other than traffic, it says. The first study involved 29 drivers who used the Volvo Pilot Assist system for three years. The second study involved 14 drivers who drove with Tesla’s autopilot for a month.

– In both studies, drivers adjusted their behavior and began to engage in activities that have nothing to do with driving – said David Harkey, president of the International Insurance Institute (IIHS).
