beekeeping is in a difficult situation both here and elsewhere

The radio program “Kasvupinnas” of the Äripää theme website Põllumujands.ee focuses on the meat market. According to Nordmel OÜ manager and beekeeper Peeter Matson, the market is powerless because there is no end to the fight against honey fraud.

Peeter Matson emphasizes in the program that the honey market is global and that the beekeepers of other countries have exactly the same concerns as our beekeepers. The biggest concern is fake honey producers who are ruining the entire honey market.

The Viljandimaa beekeeper also points out a success story, namely, as a result of years of development work, a honey DNA test created in cooperation between Estonian scientists and a few hundred beekeepers has been completed, which helps to reduce fraud spreading in the field and protects the interests of consumers and producers. Now the beekeepers hope that the test will become so-called official evidence, and this also in the wider world.

The beekeepers have also sent a message to our retail chains – let’s cooperate, let’s only sell honey with a proven background, the origin of which has been confirmed by a DNA test of the same honey, for example.

The show is hosted by Põllumejudans.ee manager Meelika Sander-Sõrmus.
