In order for the bees to successfully prepare for the winter, conscientious beekeepers have already provided for their “winterization”. During the colder months, the activity of bees in the hive increases in order to maintain heat, which results in higher food consumption. One of the basic conditions for a good wintering of bees is timely heating of the beehive and enabling normal ventilation inside the hive. During this period, it is not recommended to open the hives or to carry out activities on them that would require moving the frames, as this could disturb the bees and disturb the stability of their winter resting state.
As for herbs and spices, preparation for winter is also in full swing. Perennial medicinal plants such as sage, lemon balm and mint should be carefully pruned and their above-ground parts shortened, which could freeze during the winter. It is also useful to add fertilizer to them and cover them a little with soil to protect them from low temperatures. If there is a large amount of dry leaves and healthy residues from the previous season, it is useful to collect them and use them as mulch for additional protection of plants from freezing. In open fields and meadows, rhizomes can be harvested, while fruits such as hawthorns are harvested after the first frost. In this period, various medicinal plants are also collected, including oak lichen, juniper, dandelion, odolen, thistle, ijirot, and many others.
Not only bees and plants, but also mushrooms
November is not a month when a large amount of mushrooms can be found in the forests, but there is still a choice for avid pickers. Among the mushrooms that are available in this period are mine, pigeon, porcini, beef tongue, moedrikache, zlatache and mistletoe. Also, in November, the forests offer precious black truffles, which are highly valued and sought after on the domestic market. Once the truffles are picked, it is important to clean them immediately and prepare them for drying in order to preserve them for later use. The harvest of black trumpets, which are also popular, is now in full swing, and immediately after bringing them home they should be cleaned and prepared for drying in order to retain their delicious properties.
Therefore, this period represents an important phase of preparation both for beekeepers and pickers of medicinal plants, as well as for mushroom growers, who face specific seasonal challenges in the maintenance and preservation of natural resources. Proper preparation and responsible approach to all aspects of natural wealth can contribute to better protection and preservation of the ecosystem in the coming months.
