The war between Israel and the Lebanese Hezbollah movement means that schools in the Beirut area are closed from Monday until the end of December.
This was announced by Lebanon’s Ministry of Education on Sunday.
The temporary closure is “for the safety of students, educational institutions and parents in light of the current dangerous situation”, says Education Minister Abbas Halabi.
Lebanon’s capital and several other parts of the country have been hit by a series of Israeli airstrikes this week.
On Sunday, Israeli attacks continued against Beirut’s southern suburbs, which are controlled by Hezbollah.
The militant Shiite movement also continued to fire rockets at Israel.
According to the Israeli military, Hezbollah fired around 250 projectiles across the border into Israel on Sunday. It is among the most massive attacks during the more than a year-long conflict between the two arch-enemies.
Most of Hezbollah’s rockets were shot down by Israeli air defenses. Others caused damage to houses in central Israel. At least six people are injured, but there are no reports of fatalities.
In Lebanon, the country’s Ministry of Health announced earlier on Sunday that Saturday’s attack had killed 84 people.
Since October 2023, at least 3754 people have been killed in Lebanon. It is not known how many are militants and how many are civilians.
On the Israeli side, Hezbollah’s attacks have cost the lives of at least 82 soldiers and 47 civilians in the same period.
The decision to close schools in Beirut and the surrounding area applies to both primary schools, technical education and private educational institutions in Beirut and three neighboring districts to the Lebanese capital.
