Belgium: The government bans the display of tobacco products in shops

In Belgium, from April 1, 2025, cigarettes, classic and electronic, as well as accessories for making cigarettes will no longer be allowed to be visibly displayed in shops, and owners who violate this provision will face heavy fines.

Violation of the ban carries a fine of 2,000 to 800,000 euros, and a prison sentence of up to one year is possible, Belga reported.

According to the Federal Public Health Service, the decision applies to cigarettes, cigars, electronic cigarettes, as well as filters and papers for rolling cigarettes.

The government’s intention is to make smoking less attractive, especially for young people. Also, smoking will be banned in even more places from 2025, as part of the government’s campaign to eradicate it.

VapBel, the Belgian e-cigarette retail federation, or so-called vape cigarettes, expressed its disappointment with the government’s decision.

VapBel stated that specialized stores have their role, because they effectively check the age of customers and inform adult smokers about vape products, as a means to help quit smoking.

That federation called on the authorities to make an exception when it comes to specialized shops for electronic cigarettes, and this was also recommended by the scientific advisory body the High Health Council.
