Between Serbia and Russia, everything is a sign of progress

At the 20th session of the Intergovernmental Serbian-Russian Committee for Trade, Economic and Scientific-Technical Cooperation in St. Petersburg, the importance of agriculture as a priority area in bilateral relations between Serbia and Russia was emphasized. Assistant Minister of Agriculture of Serbia, Anja Javor, pointed out that cooperation takes place through the exchange of agricultural and food products and institutional support, which enables the connection of business entities. Special emphasis was placed on improving trade, increasing the volume and variety of products in exchange, as well as cooperation in the phytosanitary and veterinary fields, including facilitating the transportation of plant and animal products.

During the session, Deputy Minister of Agriculture of Russia, Sergey Ljvovich, took part in the discussion of key issues and directions of future cooperation. Conclusions and recommendations were adopted, and two memoranda were signed: on cooperation in the field of safety and health at work and on cooperation between the companies “Transnafta Pancevo” and “Transneft”. The protocols were signed by Nenad Popović, minister without portfolio in the Government of Serbia, and Maksim Reshetnikov, minister of economic development of Russia.

Norovirus in Serbian blackberries

At the same time, the European Rapid Alert System for Food (RASFF) sounded again. Namely, this system announced that Sweden and Denmark withdrew blackberries from Serbia from the market due to the presence of norovirus. Norovirus, which causes stomach problems, was detected in a sample during a market inspection on November 13, and a serious health risk was reported on November 20. This is the 13th notification of defective food from Serbia on the RASFF list this year. Previously, in October, incidents were registered with cinnamon, originating from Indonesia, and cucumbers with residues of the pesticide chlorpyrifos.

In conclusion, the meeting in Saint Petersburg marked the further development of agricultural cooperation between Serbia and Russia, while at the same time incidents with export agricultural products indicate the need to improve standards in quality control. Serbian-Russian relations in this area remain focused on increasing the volume of exchange and solving challenges in trade and product standardization.
