German Foreign Minister Analena Berbock expressed support for the deployment of US long-range missiles in Germany, countering criticism from her coalition.
– We have to protect ourselves and our Baltic partners through increased deterrence and additional weapons for confrontation – Berbok said in an interview with Funke media group, Politiko reported.
Berbok pointed out that Russian President Vladimir Putin has “continuously expanded the arsenal that threatens our freedom in Europe” and added that passivity in terms of additional deterrence “would be not only irresponsible, but also naive towards the ice-cold Kremlin”.
Earlier this month, Germany and the US released a joint statement saying Washington would begin deploying long-range missiles in Germany in 2026.
The US has indicated that Tomahawk cruise missiles, which can travel up to 2,500 kilometers and hypersonic weapons that fly at many times the speed of sound, could be stationed in Germany.
After the announcement, Rolf Micenih, the parliamentary leader of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democratic Party, warned that there was a “looming danger of an unintentional military escalation”.
