Bertone is preparing a car dedicated to Marcello Gandini

Last March the legendary designer Marcello Gandini passed away and Bertone is preparing a car dedicated to the Italian designer.

Gandini worked for Bertone from 1964 to 1979. During that time he created one masterpiece after another, including the Miura, Countach and Stratos.

Bertone now reports that one of these masterpieces is making a comeback. They haven’t revealed which one yet, but from the teaser image we can deduce that it’s the Autobianchi A112 Runabout. This was a radical concept car from 1969, with no roof, doors or windshield.

This car never went straight into production, but was the inspiration for the Fiat X1/9. And now, 55 years later, Bertone has come up with a modern interpretation of this design. In the teaser photo we still see the typical wedge shape, but one major difference is that the car now has a roof. And doors. And mirrors.

There is a reason for all this. Bertone wants to build this car in a limited edition. So it’s not just any show car. It will no doubt be based on an existing car and we’ll know more next Tuesday, when the new Bertone will be unveiled. It’s not entirely coincidental that October 29 is also the date Runabout was revealed.
