A couple of sensational times were set on Friday afternoon in the Ballerup Super Arena, which this week is laying gold for the WC in track cycling. In the 4,000 meter individual pursuit, Carl-Frederik Bevort once again showed his skills in the fight against the clock by crashing to the finish line in a time of 4 minutes and 4.858 seconds.
This corresponds to an average speed of 58.8 kilometers per hour and was an improvement of almost two seconds on the Danish record set by Rasmus Lund at the European Championships in Apeldoorn in the Netherlands earlier this year. It sounded at 4 minutes and 6.504 seconds.
The 20-year-old rider helped win gold in the team pursuit race as part of the Danish quartet on Thursday evening, but he showed no signs of a hangover. On the contrary, he got better and better as he approached the finish line, and it also helped that he was in the slipstream of Poland’s Kacper Majewski for a long time and eventually caught him.
Unfortunately for Bevort, it did not reach a place in the finals. The Dane was temporarily in second place, but then dropped down to number seven. Britons Josh Charlton, Charlie Tanfield and Daniel Bigham, Italian Jonathan Milan, Portuguese Ivo Oliveira and Belgian Noah Vandenbranden were all faster than 20-year-old Bevort. Only the top four advanced to the medal duels.
Charlton even managed to beat the previous world record by finishing in 3 minutes 59.304 seconds. The record had previously belonged to Italian star Filippo Ganna. The new milestone may well fall on Friday night when the final between Charlton and Milan is played.
