Of course. It doesn’t make sense to make an honest living. But in the case of this forgery, it doesn’t make sense how much work the fraudsters had to do, because the forgery is really good. With such skills, they could get hired directly at AMD.
Want to get a good gaming processor? And you want Ryzen 7800X3D? No wonder, it’s a clear choice for a gaming machine. But be careful not to fly. A professionally made fake of this processor has appeared in Romania. The duped customer paid 300 EUR, but in the end he made a profit, because the fake was bought by overclocker and DIYer der8auer for tests for 400 EUR. Of course, he looked into how the fake processor guys did. And he was literally stunned by how good a fake it was.
Of course when trying to start a PC with this processor nothing happened, dead. So we start looking. At first glance, the fake one is indistinguishable from the standard processor. But der8auer already had a few processors in his hands and he just won’t be fooled. The first thing he immediately noticed is the different color of the PCB, rather blue. That’s the first indicator. Another thing is the thickness of the PCB, the fake is only 0.964 millimeters, while the original is 1.308 millimeters. Furthermore, the fake differs slightly in the shape of the heatspreader and the inscriptions on it. Also, the capacitors from the top of the PCB are not covered with glue.
And Roman thought that the processor was missing, because when looking from the side it seemed that there were some chips after all. However, a minor shock followed, as the chips were created by imitation directly on the heatspreader, including the correct position. Overall, der8auer expressed admiration for how artfully forged this processor is, and that the heatsink, for example, is made better than AMD’s. Someone has gone to great lengths to make a practically professional fake. And it immediately occurred to me that a detailed analysis and pointing out errors is a great guide for counterfeiters on how to improve their product next time.
