US President Joseph Biden said today that he hopes President-elect Donald Trump will reconsider his plan to impose tariffs on Mexico and Canada, saying it could damage relations with close allies.

– I hope he will think again. I think it’s a counterproductive thing – he told reporters in Nantucket, Reuters reported.

According to him, America is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean and allies – Mexico and Canada.

– The last thing we need to do is to start spoiling those relations – said Biden.

Trump announced on Monday that he will impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico until they curb drug smuggling and migrants crossing the border, which, according to the British agency, would appear to violate the US-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said today that she did not specifically discuss tariffs during a telephone conversation with Trump yesterday, adding that the two agreed that relations between the two nations would be good.

After the conversation, Trump said he had agreed with Sheinbaum to stop migration through Mexico to the US, effectively closing the US southern border.
