“Based on their character and commitment to being productive members of society, I am pardoning Peach and Blossom,” Biden said in a ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House.
Weighing about 18 pounds, ‘Peach’ and ‘Blossom’ were born in Minnesota and traveled by train to Washington over the weekend. They’ve spent their lives training for grace, getting used to loud sounds, big crowds and bright lights.
However, Peach let out a few chirps, interrupting the president, who asked the birds to “keep calm.” Later, Biden took a more serious tone.
“This is the last time I speak here as president during the holiday season and I bring thanks and gratitude. Let me tell you: It was the honor of my life. I am eternally grateful,” he told a crowd of cabinet members, staff and students.
He continued: “Let’s use this moment to take some time out of our busy lives and focus on what matters most: our families (…) our friends, our neighbors and the fact that we are blessed to we live in the United States of America, the greatest wonderful country on earth.”
The president and first lady will travel to the New York area on Monday for a dinner with the military and are expected to spend Thanksgiving with family in Nantucket.
Freed from the Thanksgiving dinner, Peach and Blossom will soon retire to Farmamerica in Minnesota, a learning center, where they will be ambassador poultry for agriculture students.
