Biden says he would drop out of the presidential race if he had a serious medical problem

US President Joe Biden said in an interview on Wednesday that he would reconsider his decision to continue campaigning for the November election if a doctor diagnosed him with a serious medical problem.

Asked by Ed Gordon of Black Entertainment Television (BET) about what circumstances would make him reconsider his continued run for the White House, the American leader replied: “If I had a medical condition, if doctors came to me and told me I had this or that problem.”

“I have shown that I know how to achieve things for the country. And I don’t want to give up.”

It is the first time Biden has acknowledged that there may be some reason he is reconsidering his idea of running again as a Democratic candidate. Earlier, on ABC, Biden had said he would only quit the race if “the Lord Almighty” came down to earth and asked him to do so, “and he won’t.”

In the same conversation broadcast on Wednesday, the Democratic candidate also acknowledged that he made “a serious mistake” in the debate with Trump a few weeks ago.

In parallel, he admitted that in 2020 he said that “I was going to be a transitional candidate” and that in 2024 he would hand over the baton to someone else. “But I didn’t anticipate that things would become so, so divided,” he continued. “I think the only thing that comes with age is a bit of wisdom, and I have shown that I know how to achieve things for the country. And I don’t want to give that up,” he concluded.
